Love Conquers All Wedding Giveaway
In February 2018, Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel announced that it would award an all-expenses-paid wedding to a lucky local couple. As part of its “Love Conquers All” wedding giveaway contest, the 18-story boutique hotel invited couples in the Carolinas to share their stories about how they conquered a significant challenge together, relying upon one another in the face of adversity.
Three finalists were posted on Kimpton Tryon Park’s Facebook Page, where the public selected winning couple Mary Stanton Coltrane and Matthew Mills as the grand prize winner by casting votes in a private poll. The wedding is expected to take place in August, and a number of local vendor partners have agreed to provide their services free of charge:
- J. Leigh Events – Wedding Coordinator
- Piper Warlick Photography – Photography
- Celestial Cakery – Wedding Cake
- Lovely by Lindsey – Hair & Makeup
- CLUX Florals – Florals
- CLUX Rentals – Rentals
- Viri Lovely Designs – Stationery
Their Story: Mary Stanton & Matthew
Mary Stanton Coltrane and Matthew Mills, the winners of Kimpton Tryon Park’s “Love Conquers All” wedding giveaway contest, are high school sweethearts from Greensboro who became engaged in December 2017 after nine years together. The lovebirds went to different universities after high school, with Mary attending UNC-Chapel Hill and Matthew studying at UVA. They maintained their relationship despite the distance, and after graduating, they moved to Charlotte to start their adult lives together. But then, their story took a turn.
In March 2017, Mary Stanton was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and subsequently underwent six months of chemotherapy. Though the couple hoped for the best, a scan in late 2017 revealed her cancer was back. The best shot at a cure was to undergo a stem cell transplant, which involved new chemotherapy treatments followed by a three-week stay in the isolation wing of the hospital. Through this time, Matthew remained at her side, staying on a pullout couch next to her hospital bed to give her support.
Mary Stanton completed the transplant in February 2018, but the cost of numerous medical procedures put a financial strain on the couple. Early last year the couple entered Kimpton Tryon Park’s wedding giveaway contest, and in April 2018 they were named the winners of an all-expenses-paid, 100-person wedding at the 18-story boutique hotel in uptown Charlotte.
Mary Stanton recently finished a year of maintenance treatment. Her scan in February – one year after her stem cell transplant – revealed no cancerous activity, and she is in remission. Mary Stanton and Matthew’s wedding, scheduled to take place in August, is a beacon of light at the end of the tunnel. The couple knows the strength of their bond because they have already journeyed through the “for better or for worse” and “in sickness and in health” part of their future wedding vows.
